According to Pliny the Elder, the Ethiopian pegasus was a breed of two-horned winged horses from Ethiopia, one of many monsters born there; they reportedly lived on an island in the Red Sea off Eritrea. Medieval bestiaries such as Der Naturen Bloeme (c. 1350) show it as a horned winged horse. 'Ethiopia' was then used loosely for lands south of Egypt. One source describes the Pegasos Aithiopikos as a breed of winged, horned horse from Aithiopia (Ethiopia) in sub-Saharan Africa, derived from Pegasos, the celebrated horse of Greek myth. Pliny records that Aethiopia produces many monstrosities, including winged horses armed with horns, called Pegasi.
