Seelkee is a lake monster said to live in the swamps of Chilliwack, British Columbia, seen by the Stó:lō for centuries. It is most often a horse-headed, sea-serpent-like beast 10 to 15 feet long, or a two-headed black snake with red designs. Its image decorated Stó:lō longhouse posts. In a Chilliwack Museum piece, the creature is called s’í:lhqey, living in winding channels and marshlands and normally described as a serpent with two heads. According to the piece, s’í:lhqey have the power to twist a person's body and make them sick until death if the person runs on seeing the creature. The image captions on the museum page, taken from Oliver N. Wells's book published in 1970, record oral accounts: a big snake with a long, smooth horse's head, a long mouth and long horse-like ears. Another account says it could fly from lake to lake, and its speaker calls it a SEEL-kee. In one account a man killed it by throwing grass into its mouth and then painted the serpent over the door of his big house to protect the house.
