The Azure Dragon (青龍, Qīnglóng) is counted among the Dragon Gods, who serve as the mounts or earthly forces of the supreme deities of the five regions (五方上帝). Alongside three other creatures it makes up the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations, and it stands for the east and for spring. The dragon is sometimes called the Green Dragon or the Blue Dragon, and is known as Seiryū in Japan, Cheongryong in Korea and Thanh Long in Vietnam. Its constellation region holds seven astrological "mansions", meaning positions of the Moon. The Azure Dragon shows up as a door god in Taoist temples, and the Liji text puts it on the left of a marching order, with Xuanwu at the back and the White Tiger on the right. De Visser, following De Groot, writes that blue is chosen because it is the colour of the east, where rain comes from, and that this quarter is represented by the Azure Dragon, the highest-ranking of all dragons. He also notes that it is the symbol of Spring and that two azure dragons came down on the night Confucius was born. In Japan the Azure Dragon is one of a city's four guardian spirits and is thought to watch over the east of Kyoto. In Korea, Goguryeo tomb paintings at Uhyon-ni in South Pyongan province show the Azure Dragon with the other creatures of the four symbols. The dragon is linked with Ao Guang, Dragon King of the East Sea, who appears in Buddhist literature as the Dragon King Sagara. De Visser adds that sightings of yellow or azure dragons were nearly always taken as a very good omen.
