The Camahueto is a legendary bull of Chilote mythology with a single unicorn-like horn. It grows in rivers and moves to the ocean when grown. Versions say it eats humans, controls time and makes rain or thunder, and drags people into the sea. Only a machi can lead it back to sea with a kelp lasso. According to Chiloé Mitológico, the Camahueto is born from the depths of the earth on a hill near the sea. It looks like a green calf with a single small horn on its forehead, like the Greek unicorn. A machi catches it with a lasso of "boqui", tears off its horn ("cacho") and lets it go on to the sea. The machis plant small pieces of the horn on other hills, and after twenty-five years other camahuetos are born. Scrapings of the horn are described as the most effective medicine of the early Chilote pharmacopoeia. The same source says little is known of its aquatic life; it is said to return to the sea because the sea is where it belongs. Its stay on land is described as revenge left behind by the water spirit Coicoi-vilu to continue his destructive work. Its author interprets the imaginary animal as an explanation for apparently spontaneous landslides and as a symbol of strength, fertility and abundance.
