Yuan Mei menempatkan salah satu versi kisahnya dalam bab 12 What the Master Would Not Discuss.

The Nine-Eared Hound belongs to the mythology of the Leizhou Peninsula. The earliest surviving version in Taiping Guangji gives the hound twelve ears. Yuan Mei includes one version in chapter 12 of What the Master Would Not Discuss. The dog belongs to a hunter named Chen and predicts the number of prey through its quivering ears. The dog leads Chen to a large egg that later opens during a thunderstorm to reveal a baby. In another version the child is named Chen Wenyu, associated with the God of Thunder in Leizhou. Older Chinese texts record the tale with different numbers of ears. The Taiping Guangji describes a hunting dog with twelve ears whose moving ears were read as the number of prey; one day all its ears moved and it howled by the sea; the eggs brought home later broke open after a storm, and the shells were divided and revered by the people. The Guangdong Xinyu describes Chen Kun's nine-eared dog, which circled a thicket until a huge egg was found, from which came a boy with characters on his hands.
